Rustic Totara fence batten outdoor chairs

Chairs chairs chairs... out door chairs...

Here are the rustic chairs in their new home.

I was asked to rebuild some rustic chairs for the owner of an organic garden in Nuhaka. The owners host regular garden tours through their flower and vegetable gardens. They have places to sit all through the paths and the chairs have been there since the early 90's.

When I went to pick them up to put on my truck, they fell apart, rotten from years of sitting beneath dripping trees in shaded nooks.

So I salvaged what I could - a plank here and gnarly bit there and added a ton of Totara fence battens and posts. They look great.

Real rustic, branches and all.

Some bent wood from one of the original chairs.

Totara battens with moss and lichen.
#8 wire to hold things together betta!

I also built a very upright pallet chair for a nook in an overgrown garden area. It has since been painted blue... image to come.

Mason Bee Houses

Mason bees are those crazy bees that catch a spider and encase it in a hole so their new born babies have something to feast on when they hatch.

They make a buzzing noise while arranging the nest. Mason bees are good to have around because they help with pollination.

2 Seater Deck Chair - Pallets again.

Update for the two seater... it is now red and has a red companion table.

This 2 seater is a little different to the first one and there was a weight bearing issue due to the fact that pallet used for the seat is orientated 90 degrees, so I reinforced it with a capping on the front which sorted the bending issue straight away. Bla bla.

Bird houses

These are made out of pallet timber and an old door handle. Each one is different.

Maybe the sparrows will nest in these instead of the roof cavities.

Another 3 Legged Stool

Old fence posts found on Blacks Beach for legs and a piece of log also found on Blacks Beach.

Iconic with castors... of course.

The ABC beer crate is iconic in NZ especially when it come to Lion Red and DB. I came into possession of the crates - must keep the source under wraps - and have been making all manner of things from them. This coffee table is the latest crack at something useful... with castors.

Houlihan - fine legged retro grunge

Finding good legs is not easy. Whilst on a small trip to pick up our new dog Stanley, we stopped in at a few second -had establishments in Woodville. That is where I found the legs.

The table top needs no explanation other than it needed rebuilding and sanding.

Hooks and old wood

I like the shape of coat hooks and their functionality. There are so many uses. And beside the bed, they can be a place to hang necklaces.

There is something engaging about old wood. Old worn, painted wood.

Put it all together and there is something both useful and interesting.

OMG - Rustic Shelving Ugly Thing

I was inspired to attempt a rustic piece of furniture - a mix of driftwood and manufactured wood.

There is a stack of ABC boxes in my garage - the ones that DB Brown come in. I thought that this could be good for the experiment.

The boxes make very good shelves and - well, the drift wood legs hold it all up. The boxes are white washed to let the stenciling come through.

Two Seater Deck Chair - from Pallets

I just had to make something today. It had to be from the stack of pallets I have mounting up in the garage and it had to be for the deck.
A flash of the finished product in my minds eye, a cup of coffee and a few hours later - blammo!

Turns out to be very comfy and with a nice view too.
